Canon introduced the Canon 6D Mark II – an update to one of its popular cameras, offering the user a number of improvements, compared to its predecessor. The new 6D Mark II is equipped with a full-frame matrix with a slightly higher resolution of 26.2 MP and Dual Pixel AF function, as well as a new DIGIC 7 graphics processor. However, the most interesting thing about the new 6D Mark II is an updated autofocusing system that includes 45 points Cross type.
With a base ISO range of 100 to 40,000, a 75-pixel RGB + infrared exposure meter, a rotatable LCD display, a continuous burst rate of 6.5 frames per second and a recommended price of about $ 2,000, the 6D Mark II, Has a good chance of becoming an excellent universal camera for photographers who prefer Canon technology.

The camera is equipped with GPS and Wi-Fi (also added Bluetooth and NFC modules), one slot for SD memory cards (compatible with UHS I), support for recording video in Full HD 1080p format, flash synchronization speed of 1/180 sec. From the predecessor Canon 6D Mark II inherited the archaic interface of USB 2.0, the lack of built-in flash, 98% coverage of the viewfinder, joystick for fast movement on the points of focusing.
The disadvantages of the novelty can be attributed to the fact that all the magnificent 45 AF points are concentrated in the center of the frame, providing a smaller focus area than other Canon full-frame DSLRs.
In general, the novelty of Canon is unlikely to cause a great deal of excitement. In light of how Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Hasselblad and even Leica are working hard to introduce innovations in their products, it becomes interesting how long Canon and Nikon continue to produce SLRs that differ little from each other, continuing to ignore the mirrorless technologies?
Nevertheless, considering how many 6D owners are waiting for the upgrade of their camera, in the next few years Canon will probably be able to sell a lot of 6D Mark II, positioning it as the best camera for semi-professionals and advanced amateurs.

The ISO range was increased to a value of 40,000 units. Let me remind you that we are talking here about real ISO, and not about software expansion of photosensitivity. If you use the values of H1 and H2, then the ISO on the EOS 6D can be scooped up to sky-highs: 51200 and 102400 units respectively.
Together with the new sensor, the modern DIGIC 7 processor is working. Recently, we tested several dozen Canon cameras and can safely say that more modern image processing processors really help to get the best result, especially at high ISO.
But something else depends on the processor. For example, the speed of serial shooting. It was increased from 4.5 to 6.5 frames per second. Following the rate of fire, the camera’s buffer also grew. According to the characteristics, now it can hold up to 21 frames in RAW (three times more than the previous model!) Or up to 150 pictures in JPEG. New autofocus system
The biggest changes have affected the autofocus system. Thus, the camera sensor now supports phase-focusing using Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. And it’s really important! Most of the shooting can be safely done, looking at the screen, and not in the viewfinder. Speed and accuracy of autofocus is almost the same, only due to the touch screen to choose the focus area much faster and more convenient. And you can focus in any part of the frame.
In the viewfinder of the points of autofocus also increased: there are 45 instead of 9. The model of autofocus, apparently, is borrowed from the Canon EOS 80D. But let’s not forget that the EOS 80D is a “crashed” camera, and its autofocus module is somewhat small for the full-frame Canon EOS 6D Mark II. The autofocus points were concentrated in the middle part of the frame. There is nothing surprising: all full-frame SLR cameras have this feature.
Finally, it’s time to say about the display. It is rotary, with the possibility of touch control. And this is a huge step forward. Surprisingly, until now among the full-frame SLRs such a display is a huge rarity. The diagonal of the screen is traditional three inches, the resolution is 1.04 million pixels.
The rotary touch screen, Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology is a gift not only to photographers, but also to videographers. And let the creators did not reward the new “six” with the possibility of 4K-video, the video mode still underwent serious improvements. Full HD video can now be recorded at up to 50/60 fps. Stabilization during video shooting is possible not only with the lens, but also with five-axis electronic stabilization, which we saw for the first time in the EOS M5.
Canon EOS 6D once became one of the first cameras with Wi-Fi and GPS on board. Their developers did not clean up. But in the EOS 6D Mark II wireless capabilities were added to NFC and Bluetooth, which simplify communication with mobile devices.
Construction and control
The interface and design of cameras almost does not change from model to model. EOS 6D Mark II was no exception. Differences from the previous model can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
Screen and touch interface
The main external difference is the touch-sensitive fully rotatable display instead of the usual fixed one. Whatever one may say, this is a huge step forward in terms of convenience. With its help, you can perform any manipulation: from moving through the menu to changing the parameters directly during the shooting. All the settings that are displayed on the display in the frame are clickable.
Naturally, the display allows you to touch the focus point, release the shutter, increase the photo taken by gestures. There is a fast on-screen menu, which is ideal for touch control. Not implemented only a customizable shortcut menu, which we liked so much in professional mirrors from Canon.
Classic Management Interface
Although Canon EOS 6D Mark II is aimed at amateurs and enthusiasts, its interface is much closer to professional models. There are the same two control discs (under the index finger and on the back panel), the same access buttons to the main shooting settings next to the shutter release button.
Note that unlike the same Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, these buttons have instead of two only one function, which can be changed both the front and rear control disc. The beginner will not get confused, but as a result of this simplification, the ability to quickly change the white balance (with the default settings) and introduce a flash correction is lost.
No matter how good the EOS 6D Mark II touch screen is, an intelligent optical viewfinder can completely outshine it. It covers 98% of the frame area with an increase of 0.71x. Working with him is a pleasure. A positive emotion adds the ability to fine-tune output information.
For example, by default, the information about the battery charge, shooting mode, shutter operation, autofocus and metering is turned off. All this can be seen in the viewfinder after fine-tuning the camera for your shooting style.
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II is equipped with a somewhat archaic USB 2.0 with a Mini USB socket, has an HDMI output, a wire remote control connector type N3 on the front panel. There is an input for the microphone (3.5 mm jack), but there is no output to the headphones.
Materials and build quality
Canon EOS 6D Mark II exchanged a partially metal case for plastic. Plus it or minus – time will tell and the real experience of photographers. But one thing can be said right now: the quality of assembly at the highest level. The details are perfectly matched to each other, there are no backlashes or creaks. There is nothing to complain about.
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II housing is dust and waterproof, as reported in the official specifications of the model. We checked: rain, dew, morning fogs to this camera are not terrible.
Canon EOS 6D Mark II of those cameras that are already capable of JPEG to provide high quality images: natural colors, a good dynamic range. However, the photographer often requires a thoughtful alignment of the image style, and in difficult conditions – the white balance.
Already in the JPEG, the camera is able to provide a wide range of dynamic amateur tasks for the amateur photographer. But we are interested in another thing: how are the lights and shadows in RAW?
Open the snapshot in Adobe Camera Raw. The frame is made on the minimum ISO 100. If you start to draw deep shadows, then absolutely painlessly you can correct the exposure to +2 steps. Such correction shows new, previously indistinguishable details in the shadows and very slightly increases digital monochrome noise. Further increase in the exposure of new parts does not add, but allows further clarification of the available ones.

After +2.5 steps, monochrome noise is more pronounced, and after +3 steps, the degradation of image details becomes noticeable. However, the careful use of sharpening and noise reduction tools makes it possible to obtain a qualitative result even when adjusting the exposure by three steps in plus. Color noise does not manifest itself.

Nonlinear correction with the Shadows slider allows you to work in the entire range of values from 0 to 100%, providing a high-quality result with high detail and low noise. Excellent result for working with shadows. And what about the resurgence?

When working with overexposures, the new sensor from Canon demonstrates good flexibility. If you reduce the exposure to -2 steps in Adobe Photoshop at the RAW conversion stage, you can get new details in the image, show overexposed clouds invoices. Of the stronger backlightings, alas, nothing can be stretched. But this result is also very good.

Against the backdrop of such a flexible RAW file, the presence of a built-in HDR-camera (available only in JPEG) seems even slightly illogical … However, it is better to have such an opportunity at hand.
“HDR Artistic Standard” Effect
For beginners, the function may be useful. HDR has several settings and allows you to get the result with different effects.
Shooting at high ISO. Noises.
At a minimum ISO value of 100 noises can be seen neither in the shadows, nor in the lights. The picture is very smooth. Detailing is high. Find fault with nothing.
Increasing ISO to 200 and 400 units does not change anything in the nature of the image. At ISO 800, monochrome noise on monotonous surfaces is barely noticeable, but this trend is noticeable only in comparison with lower values of sensitivity.
Minor degradation of the image in the shadows occurs at ISO 1600: the details are slightly lost. ISO 3200 increases the friability of shadows. But the result still remains sufficient for high-quality photo printing. The threshold ISO can be considered as 6400 units. If in light and medium tones the situation with this ISO is still good, then the shadows begin to seriously lose detail. This ISO is applicable in practice, but it is not suitable for all plots.
ISO 12800 is characterized by a general decrease in the detail of the average tones. Color rendition begins to suffer. The tendency is clearly visible on the example of the icon above the entrance to the temple. The colors on it are already barely discernible. This ISO can be used to publish pictures in a network or print in a small format. If we are talking about the conversion of RAW, then with skillful noise reduction it is quite possible to prepare a frame shot at ISO 12800, for printing up to A4. ISO 25600 and 40000 are more suitable for those cases when you need to fix the moment at any cost. For artistic shooting, they provide insufficient detail, lead to degradation of color reproduction. However, such frames can also be used for publication on the network.
The advantage over the EOS 6D is not overwhelming, but it is present.Once again we note that without a fundamental change in the technological process of producing image sensors, it is not worth waiting for a sharp improvement in image quality. The quality of the images has improved over the past few years, but this is a gradual process, not a leap forward.
Work speed and autofocus
Check the speed of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and the accuracy of its automation, we decided in a reportage shooting at an air show.
If earlier many shots I shot with the help of a sight on the screen, this time he was left out of work. Bright sun and shooting dynamics required the use of an optical viewfinder. Work with him in the EOS 6D Mark II – a pleasure. I preconfigured the output of the parameters I needed, including the framing grid and the level, directly into the viewfinder and could control the camera and monitor the survey without detaching from the camera’s eyepiece.
Let me remind you that the speed of the serial shooting of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II is 6.5 frames / s. The comparatively large buffer of the camera is “hammered” in little less than 4 seconds.
This is enough to record the take-off or landing of the aircraft, a fragment of the aerobatics figure. But the need to sustain a pause for recording pictures on a USB flash drive still severely limited the freedom of shooting.
Lowering the rate of fire at an air show, we run the risk of missing out on a good shot. So I decided to shoot mostly in JPEG, including RAW only when I’m sure that I will shoot relatively short series.
It is necessary to pay tribute to the automation of the camera: the work of metering, white balance and other systems allow you to get a high-quality result without additional processing.
Reportage and event shooting – those genres where the automatic operation of the camera is extremely important. The photographer is able to control all parameters only for some time, and then comes fatigue and, as a result, loss of control.
Hands get tired after about an hour. And to think about the choice of the autofocus zone, there is definitely no power. So I decided to rely on the EOS 6D Mark II automation. Yes, this is not the EOS-1D X Mark II, but with the task the camera coped no worse.
I worked with a wide area of autofocus and continuous autofocus AF-Servo. The camera itself chose active points of autofocus, and she did it on a solid five. For several hours of shooting autofocus has never escaped from an airplane to the clouds.
Of course, its role, positive, was played by the specificity of this model: all 45 points of autofocus are grouped closer to the middle of the frame, forming a single dense area, into which the aircraft is guaranteed to get. If this area is wider, there could be more mistakes. But in this case, the lack of a camera proved to be an advantage.
Let me remind you that the crowded points of autofocus in the center of the frame can play a bad joke with fans of high-speed optics. If you place the subject of the shot in the frame closer to the edge, it does not get the autofocus points, and you’ll have to shoot with a preliminary refocusing and further re-arrangement. Sometimes this results in a loss of sharpness and increases the chance to miss the moment. But in our test we did not encounter this complexity.
In the rest the autofocus worked perfectly. All 45 AF points in the viewfinder are of the cross type (they are sensitive to both horizontal and vertical lines in the frame). The object of shooting, they literally hold “teeth”, no matter how fast it moves. Of the more than two thousand photographs in marriage on the focal point, it took me no more than a couple dozen.
General impressions of the speed of Canon 6D Mark II
The overall speed of the camera was so high that it seems that nothing about it. There are no inhibitions, there are no annoying factors – like, and there are no emotions either. But in fact, this is an important feature that we must mention. Lag inclusion is not felt, waking the camera from sleep mode instant. Lag gate is minimized, I could not feel it.
Special thanks to the developers want to say for the ergonomics of the EOS 6D Mark II.The camera does not tire the hand even with a heavy TV. The camera is easy to hold and carry with one hand, lowering the lens. The handle is moderately large and snug. All the buttons are at hand.
I had to get used to only navipada. In my opinion, it turned out a little less and a little softer than I would have liked. Accuracy of pressing, especially in fast shooting conditions, is lost.
With Canon EOS 6D Mark II, I worked a full filming day using a heavy stabilized TV. I did not deny myself the pleasure of viewing pictures on the screen during and after shooting, and also recorded a few videos.
The next day the frame counter in the menu showed the figure 2345, and the battery charge indicator in the menu – 58%. Excellent result, despite the fact that official figures include the figure of 1200 frames.
The predecessor – Canon EOS 6D – has become unofficially one of the most energy efficient Canon SLRs. It seems that the updated model has completely inherited this property.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC
Canon EOS 6D Mark II not only inherited the wireless capabilities of the EOS 6D, but also acquired new ones. So, in the second version of the camera, Bluetooth and NFC were added to Wi-Fi. They are needed primarily to simplify the installation of the connection, but everything in order … First, install the Canon Camera Connect application (designed for both Android and iOS).
Wi-Fi in Canon EOS 6D Mark II is used for three main activities. The first is remote control. You can see on the smartphone’s screen a live picture from the camera with a very short delay (less than half a second). The photographer is provided with basic shooting settings and shutter release, and a videographer – many video settings and video recording start. There is even a manual focus from the screen of the smartphone. You can use your smartphone as a wireless remote control when shooting from a tripod and in a number of other tasks, including self-shooting, video-logging. Composing the future shot, standing in front of the camera, is not at all a problem!
The second possibility, which opens Wi-Fi, is the transfer of pictures to the memory of the mobile device. An indispensable thing in the journey! And we are thus leading our Instagram.
Finally, from the smartphone you can enter a number of camera settings, including the system time. But the function of the location using a smartphone for this camera is not available. However, why it, if there is a built-in GPS?
Well, now a few words about why the Canon EOS 6D Mark II is built-in Bluetooth.This connection is much more energy efficient than Wi-Fi. The camera can be connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth all the time, and the battery will not sit down. By itself, Bluetooth does not provide any control capabilities, but it can initiate Wi-Fi communication (if previously the devices were connected in pairs).
For this, you do not even need to press anything in the camera menu. Switching to the menu of wireless networks of the phone occurs automatically, the password from the necessary network is also automatically copied to the buffer. It remains only to establish a connection and return to the Canon Camera Connect application. It’s much easier and faster than it was in the previous version of the camera. And if your smartphone supports NFC, just connect two devices – a camera and a smartphone – to establish a connection.
This function is implemented here really well. The sensor that receives GPS signals, GLONASS and Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), has two modes of operation. In the first, it is always on. This increases the accuracy of positioning, but conspicuously consumes the battery charge (even when the camera is turned off). In the second – the charge charge in the switched off state does not occur. But after turning on the camera does not immediately “find itself” in space and time.
In addition, you can manually configure the polling interval for satellites. This will reduce the accuracy of positioning, but will further reduce power consumption. So, with the update period of a few minutes, the GPS does not affect the battery’s charge. But you can always tell exactly where these or those pictures were taken. Attention, in the screenshot below “we give” the shooting point!
To make a camcorder from a Canon EOS 6D Mark II camera, you just need to switch the lever on the back panel under your thumb to the appropriate position. This changes a number of menu items, and video shooting can be started with the Start / Stop button, which in the photo mode is responsible for the Live View mode.
Naturally, all the limitations inherent in other cameras, have not gone away. The maximum length of the video is 29 minutes 59 seconds, the file size is 4 GB. If the file size exceeds 4 GB, a new file is created automatically (except for interval shooting mode).
Recording is possible in resolutions up to 1920 × 1080 at 50/60 frames / s. The file formats are MPEG4 AVC / H.264. The compression method is selected between IPB and ALL-I. So fashionable now 4K-video shooting is available only for interval rollers.
It is possible to use an external microphone. However, there is no output to the headphones. This somewhat limits the use of the camera in reportage video.
During recording, the setting of all shooting parameters is available. There is a fast phase autofocus on technology Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Face recognition works. Speed and accuracy of autofocus is enough even for shooting planes.
If slow and smooth autofocus is important for your video, the refocus rate can be reduced in the camera menu. In this case, it’s very convenient to change the object to be touched by touching the screen, and the automation will smoothly translate the focus.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II combines versatility with high image quality and a relatively affordable price. In the updated Canon lineup, he is the youngest full-frame SLR camera. However, its capabilities are quite enough for all amateur and many professional tasks, so its characteristics are so balanced.
Compared with the previous model, the EOS 6D Mark II added literally on all points: the resolution increased to 26 megapixels, ISO workstations increased, increased to 6.5 frames / s, the autofocus system now consists of 45 crosspoints.
