Being the owner of several flagships of the past generations – Samsung Galaxy S6 and Motorola Droid Turbo 2 – I was interested in the OnePlus devices, which managed to release the fifth (in fact the fourth) generation of its flagship smartphone. If you go away from bored slogans in the style of “killer of killers of flagships”, OnePlus 5 turned out to be quite original and interesting. Dual camera, moderate design, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which will be relevant for at least a couple of years and as much as 6 GB (or 8 GB in the top version) of RAM. What should I do with it?
OnePlus 5 – price. Where is the best place to buy?
The OnePlus 5 recommended retail price in the US is $ 500. At this cost, you can order it on Amazon. I would not recommend ordering anywhere else except on Amazon. Since you are less likely to find cheaper, and if you do not take into account the fact that Amazon is probably the most reliable online store, it still very often provides free shipping.

The smartphone was delivered in a modest branded box, designed in red and black. Package includes:
- USB Type C cable
- power supply unit (5V – 4A)
- a paper clip for removing a SIM card
- set of instructions
On the one hand, nothing special. On the other hand, this set looks nice and practical, the red cable is easily found among a pile of junk in a bag or on a table.
Design and ergonomics
How many have already said that the designers of OnePlus have simply outlined the iPhone 7 Plus. I don’t hint at anything, but Huawei (P10) and Xiaomi (Mi 6) and countless Chinese smartphone manufacturers are struck by a similar disease. If you look at the OnePlus 5 from the front, you will never guess at first what the device is in front of you.
The practical aspect was more important for me, and everything is fine with it. The case of the smartphone is made of metal, which is much better withstand the neighborhood of keys and a knife in your pocket than the glass Galaxy S6 did.
On the other hand, the fingers do not have anything to hold on, and if you try to move the smartphone more comfortable, there’s a great chance to drop it. It is often necessary to shift the smartphone when used with one hand – 5.5 inches display dictates its conditions.
Under the smartphone screen is the touch key “Home” with a fingerprint scanner. In the neighborhood there are two function keys. Unlike Xiaomi, Nokia and other “Chinese”, they are completely invisible, unless a small backlight diode lights up when they are pressed.
Fingerprint scanner is beyond praise. It works immediately and under the most uncomfortable corners. For me this is important, since the Galaxy S6 scanner often jammed, and I generally turned it off.
Another good feature of OnePlus 5 is the lever on the left side that turns the smartphone into silent mode or vibro. It’s strange that this trick has not been repeated by other manufacturers.
OnePlus 5 did not receive a slot for memory cards, but it is equipped with two sockets for SIM cards. I do not know if this is a useful option (I myself use only one), but for the flagships of the top brands, two sim cards for some reason didn’t catch on.
After the Droid Turbo 2 and Galaxy S6 it was a little obvious that my next device will also be with AMOLED-display. I really like the deep black color and acid shades. For this, even ready to reconcile with the inevitable degradation of the matrix. On both my previous devices, it manifested itself in a year of active exploitation, especially in the status bar area – phantom bands and an easy burnout effect.
The OnePlus 5 screen shows an excellent picture that remains readable even in the sun. For this, the smartphone adjusts the brightness to the limit. The brightness reserve is good, and the automatic adjustment is triggered for a second.
The screen size doesn’t allow comfortable use your smartphone “on the fly”, but make him a good mini-tablet for movies, car navigation and work with small documents.
It is rather difficult to objectively evaluate cameras in flagship smartphones. Usually they are very similar: someone better copes with night shooting, someone better stabilization on moving objects.
A very strong feature of OnePlus 5 is portrait photography and macro photography. The second camera helps effectively blur the background, and pictures of nearby objects are very detailed. See for yourself, especially on an example with a clock.
Full-size images can be downloaded here.
The camera has a lot of settings, there is an advanced mode with manual settings and a double optical zoom.
I have positive impressions of the OnePlus 5 images – the device covers all the standard needs for taking photos and video. The only niggling is not a very natural color rendition. Software algorithms for image processing are tuned to make beautiful, but not natural.
Iron and Shell
That, for which everyone loves smartphones of this manufacturer – flagship hardware at a price twice lower than competitors. This year, the difference in the price tag is not so significant, but with the characteristics not deceived.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 – the most powerful chip for Android-smartphones at the time of writing the material shows the best results in benchmarks, it gives an opportunity to play any toys on the maximum graphics settings. And, most importantly, almost no heating. Half an hour in Asphalt 8 and the smartphone still remains almost cold.
The RAM in my instance is as much as 6 GB. What to do with it and why so much? Perhaps it will be clear in a year or two. While you can play with a two-window mode, which supports about a quarter of applications.
Moreover, on sale there is a modification of OnePlus 5 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of memory. And this is like in my laptop. The OS version is practically clean and very minimalistic. Oxygen OS firmware adds just a few useful trivia like secure storage of private data, game mode (disables physical buttons) and read mode (makes the colors soft, the eyes get tired less at night).
The preset launcher is also modest in terms of settings, but it has a drop-down panel on the left, where you can place widgets and reminders.
The speaker on the smartphone is loud, but it’s the only one and is located at the bottom, because of what I quite often overlap it with my hand. When you listen to music at maximum volume, the phone starts to vibrate a little.
The smartphone has NFC, but there is no infrared port. I’m very used to it, using the Galaxy S6, which
substituted me with remotes from two TVs and an office air conditioner.
During the operation, the smartphone rebooted several times. I could not understand the reason for such behavior.
When I use one, the OnePlus 5 runs from one charge from early morning until late at night. The smartphone is constantly connected to the Internet, the smart bracelet Amazfit Arc and the Bluetooth headset through which I listen to music and answer calls.
For emergency situations, energy saving modes are provided.
The smartphone supports fast charging Dash Charge and in an hour can make up about 80% of the energy. However, for fast charging, you need both a proprietary power supply and a red cable from the kit.
OnePlus 5 – an excellent flagship device, which is nice to use. It does not have obvious drawbacks – it is a powerful workhorse, created for active exploitation, but not to impress others.
The absence of bright chips or WOW-effect – the main drawback of the smartphone. It will work out each of $ 479 invested in it dollars, but no one will know about it. Far from the world of technology people quickly recognize the iPhone of any model, Samsung Galaxy with a curved display or LG G6 with two large photo modules. And OnePlus 5 will be familiar only to a small circle of geeks.
To everyone who is not critical about the status or impressions of others, I can recommend this device to buy.
