Onkyo HT-S5805 – review and test of receiver and a set of 5.1-speakers

Inexpensive introduction to Dolby Atmos and the breakdown of stereotypes

Home theater “in the box” is the first stage of acquaintance with multi-channel sound. I remember DVD-players with built-in multi-channel amplifier and a set of small plastic speakers, or with a subwoofer, in which the amplifiers are for the other channels. I think many people have heard such systems, and no one had any illusions that they are at the forefront of progress. No calibration systems were provided, wireless technologies were not supported. Only rare sets were equipped with wooden acoustics, the reserve of undistorted loudness was small, often even the length of the wires was insufficient, and they were embedded in acoustics tightly.
Let’s get acquainted with the modern home theater system – Onkyo HT-S5805.

Onkyo HT-S5805 – price. Where is the best place to buy?

The Onkyo HT-S5805 recommended retail price is $ 599,00. At this cost, you can order it on Amazon. I would not recommend ordering anywhere else except on Amazon. Since you are less likely to find cheaper, and if you do not take into account the fact that Amazon is probably the most reliable online store, it still very often provides free shipping.

Key features

The clash of stereotypes began immediately on all fronts.

The system is manufactured by Onkyo, one of the recognized leaders in the Hi-Fi industry. In fact, the kit consists of a full receiver, wooden speakers and an active subwoofer. On the box, the icons indicate the main features of the HT-S5805, and these are not marketing and “improvements”, as often happens, but modern technologies from the world of receivers, usually found in models at least the average level in the product line.

Packing Onkyo HT-S5805

“Dolby Atmos enabled system” means that the cinema supports a new format of the object-oriented sound Dolby Atmos, and this support is implemented not only at the program level in the receiver. Here, without any additional investment, you can organize a complete scheme 5.1.2. Each front speaker is connected to two pairs of terminals on the receiver. From one pair of terminals, the signal goes to the traditional front channels, and from the other pair to the speaker located in the upper plane of the speaker. The sound of this speaker is reflected from the ceiling, realizing the high-altitude channel required for Dolby Atmos. The presence of individual terminals allows, if desired, to connect the signal for a high-altitude channel to the ceiling columns, of which there are many now.

“UltraHD 4K” means that Onkyo HT-S5805 fully supports 4K-resolution (HDMI 2.0 4K 60p (4: 4: 4)) and the latest HDCP profile version 2.2. Looking ahead, during the two-week testing, no claims to the video part in terms of skipping the content on the 4K-TV or on the 2K-projector did not arise. Also, all the functions related to auto-switching and turning off the components of the home theater and skipping the signal in sleep mode worked correctly.

The third icon is Bluetooth. Here everything is clear and simple: we find the Onkyo HT-S5805 by searching for Bluetooth-devices in the phone or tablet and put a check mark, so that all multimedia sounds are transmitted to the receiver. In addition to the obvious scenario – listening to music – you can, for example, watch videos in Youtube, while the sound will be played by a multi-channel system. Everything works quickly, there were no hangs or breaks. The main thing is not to go far with the phone from the listening room. It is very convenient that you do not need a network player, a computer, or wires. It is enough to have a stock of music on your mobile device. And the control on such devices is by definition more convenient and faster than with the remote control.
Complete Onkyo HT-S5805
After opening the box, you can see quite a surprise gift: a complete microphone for automatic calibration AccuEQ. But about the calibration further.
Complete Onkyo HT-S5805
The arrangement of the components in the box is well thought out, they lie and are rigidly fixed with “floors”. Frontal columns stand vertically and pass through their “floor” to the middle level. At the first level there is a subwoofer between them. The smallest Surround-speakers and the larger-sized column of the central channel are at an average level. At the top is a receiver and a compartment for the remote, a microphone, an antenna, wires. All wires of different colors, their length was enough to accommodate speakers in a room of 26 m².
Onkyo HT-S5805
The terminals of the front columns are screwed, the rest are spring ones. The subwoofer is connected to the receiver with a standard RCA cable 3 meters long. I liked the intuitive signatures to the HDMI connectors. The HDMI output is one, for viewing on the projector you have to switch the cable. But this is usually for the devices of the initial and even the middle level. The receiver has a surprisingly large number of analog inputs – perhaps owners of outdated technology may find this useful. There is no LAN connector, because the receiver does not support LAN operation. The USB port is there, but its purpose is to power the optional Strm Box multimedia player.
Onkyo HT-S5805
The information display is located on the front panel of the receiver, below it are the operation mode control keys. A large rotary volume control is located on the right. I liked the presence of the output to the headphones, disappointed the lack of a front HDMI-input.
Onkyo HT-S5805
The remote control lies well in the hand and is not overloaded with a multitude of buttons. Frequently used buttons are larger in size and are conveniently located. Button illumination and programming functions of the remote control are not provided, but considering the product niche of the receiver, this can hardly be considered a disadvantage.
Onkyo HT-S5805
The appearance of the columns and the quality of their production is very good. All columns are made of MDF, equipped with spring terminals and a non-removable grill of a pleasant texture. The subwoofer is mounted on four cone-shaped legs, its front panel is made of glossy plastic. When the subwoofer is operating, the blue LED is lit.

Before calibration, I set the 5.1.2 scheme with Atmos-speakers in front of the receiver in the receiver’s menu. All possible variants of acoustic circuits in the selection are illustrated by color graphics depicting the number and position of the speakers and listener in the room. The calibration does not look simplistic and reproduces the test sounds that are customary for setting up other equipment. After calibration, you can see the results and manually correct the distances and levels. There is also an equalizer and several listening modes, including Direct.
Onkyo HT-S5805
Bass surprised at the first start. He is full, with the right level and depth, and does not associate with the “movie theater in the box”. The subwoofer plays the speaker in the direction of the floor. It has only a level regulator, which was set at approximately 70%, and further experiments with volume bass track made only through level adjustment using the remote receiver. By the way, these adjustments are organized conveniently and do not require numerous switching between different menus. The subwoofer copes with the room under 30 m² and almost 3-meter ceilings. The dynamics are big, but the subwoofer does not “choke”. Distortion is only heard at very high volume levels. The sound of a large port of the bass reflex, located on the front panel of the subwoofer, is not audible.

For two weeks, in addition to many films with “habitual” audio HD tracks, films with original Atmos tracks were viewed: “Deepwater horizon”, “13 hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”. And never arose the feeling that low frequencies are not enough. The subwoofer gets a lot of work, because the crossover calibration was set quite high by the standards of cinemas from separate components – at 120 Hz.The receiver in this case transmits to the subwoofer, in addition to the separate LFE track, all frequencies from other channels below 120 Hz. In catastrophe films and war films, this may mean that the subwoofer will work without interruption for a long time and do not turn off the entire film, which was happening.

If necessary, the crossover frequency can be changed manually. In our test, the best option was to leave the value specified by the calibration. It was noticed that the room has a maximum impact at certain frequencies. This did not lead to a buzz, but gave the same “juicy” bass, typical for the cinema subwoofers in the FI-design.

Interestingly, in multichannel concerts, the subwoofer, contrary to expectations, does not stand out. This indicates a well-structured and realized interface with the rest of the acoustics and good program bass management in the receiver.

I could write a sound for a long time, but it’s enough to confine myself to the main characteristic: there is no feeling of any inferiority, limitation, “toy” sound. The sound is full, pumping the entire room without losing the purity and localization. Also it should be noted that sound in any modes and at any volume does not become sharp and tedious. The total feed is enveloping, but without excessive smoothing. The dynamics are very good. As for the impression of Atmos-tracks, they are positive. The positioning is impressive, and in fact there is an expansion of the sound picture up. But in order to fully understand the limitations of the approach of building high-altitude channels by reflecting sound, rather than installing individual ceiling columns, additional tests with ceiling columns are necessary. Unfortunately, we did not have such an opportunity. Ideally, it would be nice to have a 5.1.4 system with two front and two rear ceiling speakers, but the Onkyo HT-S5805 kit has 7 gain channels, so you can implement either 2 front or 2 rear Atmos speakers, but not all four at the same time .

Result

In general, the Onkyo HT-S5805 gives the impression of an extremely verified product with advanced functions for sets of this kind, but without an overabundance of functions, which would inevitably increase the price of the set. So, the lack of 2 additional columns for installation on the ceiling is compensated by the simpler ones in the installation built into the front-end Atmos-speakers. The lack of network functions and USB port for external storage is compensated by the presence of Bluetooth-streaming, which in many cases is even more convenient. Absence of upscaling is uncritical, because modern display devices are well cope with this task themselves, and pass-through mode in the receiver works correctly.

In the end, it turns out that this kit is the most affordable and fastest option to get Atmos-sound. The presence of all wires with a margin in length for most applications fully fits into the concept of obtaining the fastest possible result without unnecessary expenditure.

Pros:

  • Impressive sound
  • advanced switching
  • the ability to add or replace columns
  • support for modern technology
  • support for Dolby Atmos soundtracks
  • Readiness to work with Ultra HD Blu-ray players
  • Surround sound system 5.1.2
  • the ability to receive music from mobile gadgets via Bluetooth

Cons:

  • There is no way to listen to music from external media or over the network
  • One HDMI output
  • there is no possibility of integration into the computer network and playback of audio from network resources
  • lack of a USB port and the ability to play audio from USB storage
  • spring-loaded acoustical terminals (except for outputs to the front on the receiver)

Owner’s opinion
