Perhaps, only in personal preferences. Which can be supported also legislatively by a total prohibition on copying and distribution of files on the Network. Other reasons for the use in our time of such an archaic medium, as a non-rewritable optical disc, the author will not be able to name. Perhaps one of the readers will tell? We are grateful.
However, no. One reason still remained. More precisely, appeared. This happened recently and is connected with the beginning of the distribution of a new format for video for optical media: Ultra HD Blu-ray. This format allows you to burn a movie with a frame size of 4K and even with HDR technology. Yes, this is a multiple increase in detail, caused by a multiple increase in the number of pixels. And yes, the extended range eliminates such a known encoding defect as the boundaries of the shades in the gradient fills (although the TV is also required corresponding, with HDR technology, but this is particular).
By the way, it is likely that soon on sale will appear (if not already appeared) Ultra HD Blu-ray-discs with the old well-known films on them. But what about the Dune player that came to our comparison: it does not have a UHD Blu-ray drive? No problem, for him, too, there is a similar content. And in a very similar format. Yes, about sound. We are still with awe and respect for the position and opinions of connoisseurs of crystal sound. The word of this audiophile is final and it is not subject to protest, it is an axiom for any forum. But the article is not a forum. And to convey in words all the nuances (if any) of audio reproduction by this or that device is not possible. Therefore, we note only the purely technical aspects concerning the features of the output of multichannel and HD sound. They, of course, have long been known to professionals, but beginners may not realize all these difficulties.
Both players are equally able to output to the receiver any HDMI audio format available in the movie being played. The sound can be fed as recoded in LPCM, or in the Pass through mode, or, otherwise, RAW – this is determined in the player settings. However, coaxial and optical digital audio outputs do not have such capabilities due to the limited bandwidth: they do not output Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio. Instead of the listed formats, players output to these interfaces an audio signal with a lower resolution, albeit multi-channel. It was a technical aspect. However, in addition to technical difficulties, there are other types of obstacles, legal. Thus, the reproduction of audio content in SACD or DVD-Audio format through coaxial or optical digital audio outputs is not possible at all because of the narrow bandwidth of these connections. This restriction has a completely artificial origin and is imposed by copyright owners. And all because the S / PDIF interface does not assume built-in copy protection. In conclusion of the tuning chapter, we estimate the network capabilities of the players. The correct way to connect a stationary media player to a network is, of course, a gigabit wired connection. With him, you can get adequate results, close to those that the developer guarantees. Use a wireless connection in the 2.4 GHz band in urban conditions is almost meaningless due to the busyness of the air and, in this regard, the unpredictability of the results. The adapter installed in the player can work at 5 GHz, but its operation requires a compatible router. In addition, the use of Wi-Fi in a device that is installed in a rack and works side by side with other “fonjayuschimi” devices, it is difficult to be called a good option.
In the review of the Dune HD Duo 4K we noted the low speed of the Ethernet adapter of this player, explaining its features to SoC, which, in fact, is an updated version of the chip many years ago and is focused primarily on working with video in BD-players, and not in network storage . The speed of the corresponding adapter for the Oppo UDP-203 player is not yet known to us. But now it’s time to compare both players, as they say, to the forehead, checking their ability to “pull” from the network drive video files that have a high level of bitrate. To do this, we use the prepared files compressed by the HEVC codec and having a constant (CBR) bit rate. In order not to lose time, let’s start by playing the files with the highest possible bitrate, 100 Mbps. These files are located on the network storage, which is connected to the cable through a gigabit switch.
According to the results of the experiment to the player Oppo there are no complaints, it easily reproduces even such a “heavy” video. But Dune with playback failed – its buffer was enough for only ten seconds of smooth playback, after which the sound track disappears first, and then the skips of frames, jerks and short-term freezing began. To be fair, we note an important fact: the video being played has a constant bitrate, and this does not happen in movies (if it’s not about illiterate homemade pieces). In addition, files with a bitrate of 90 Mbit / s – just 10 Mbps below the critical level – Dune reproduces on the network without any complaints.
Unfortunately, we do not have an opportunity to estimate the maximum possible speed of the wireless network interfaces of the players due to the lack of a router that would support the new high-speed 802.11ac transmission standard. To use the same standard of the previous generation makes sense only for playback on the network of low-bit content – for example, music, or low-quality video. Despite the lack of necessary equipment, we still tried to reproduce both players with different bitrate material using Wi-Fi connection, even on the 802.11b / g / n standard. To ensure that the presence of sound during playback was visual, we placed in each frame an appropriate indicator of the audio level.
Main output: the Wi-Fi adapter of the Dune player was again unjustifiably slow (in the review of this player it was pointed out this drawback, but with the caveat: some hardware conflicts of the adapters are possible). Bitrate video, on which the player does not “stutter”, reproducing it from a network storage via a Wi-Fi connection, is only 20 Mbps. It looks all the more strange that the Oppo player, having exactly the same adapter (and not having any antennas at the same time), quietly reproduces 60 megabit video through the same router on the same Wi-Fi connection.
But in the box of abilities Dune has a good counter argument: the player is able to create a wireless access point, thereby expanding the coverage of Wi-Fi in the house. In this case, the point created by the player can have a frequency of 2.4 or 5 GHz:

For this reason, we will not repeat ourselves, but focus on the similar functions of the main “culprit” of the article, Oppo UDP-203. Its main purpose is the reproduction of optical media, where the apotheosis of the opportunity is to play a new format for 4K Ultra HD discs with HDR technology (High Dynamic Range, wide dynamic range). Those users who are “in the subject” probably know the pros and cons of this technology. In the advantages of HDR-video there is a natural transfer of hues, an unprecedented juiciness of colors, a deeper black and bright white, etc., etc. – for the imagination of professional marketers, we still can not keep up. Perhaps all this is true (the author’s colleague has already made attempts to see the striking differences), but the main and undeniable effect from the use of HDR technology is the absence of visible shade boundaries on gradient fills. Most likely, every reader watched in the movies of the scene, where in the frame there is a background with smoothly changing brightness and color. For example, a clear sky. And for certain in this firmament there were noticeable “paths”, indicating boundaries of similar shades. This defect in the HDR-record, you will not see – the gradient will be smooth and continuous, like in the real sky. But in order to get such pleasure, it is not enough to have the necessary HDR-content and the player, which can decode it. The TV should also support a wide range of technologies, and until recently such models were a curiosity and they cost very inhuman money. Now, in all likelihood, the situation is gradually beginning to be corrected and HDR-TVs will become cheaper, just as it happened in the past with 3D-technology.
Technical differences between 8-bit and 10-bit video streams are not so great. When encoding video, different profiles can be used, but the Main 10 profile is used only for encoding 10-bit video.

This profile with the number 10 was the main obstacle for the reproduction of this video by all players of previous generations. However, the Oppo UDP-203 is not afraid of any profiles or frame size (of course, the maximum of 4K, including the “cine-academic version” 4096 × 2160), nor the frequency. Unlike the Dune player, which is built on a fairly old processor (of course, the word “old” in general terms may seem inappropriate, but in the electronics industry, this term can be referred to as a model half a year old). No, with the bit in the Dune player everything is almost in order – the processor is able to decode 10-bit video. But the existing HDMI video output version 1.4 allows streaming only in 8-bit performance, and the processor is not able to adequately decode 4K-video with a frame rate above 30.
That’s just the maximum frame rate during playback and is the most obvious difference between the compared players. Visible – literally. Because, thanks to special video files and a camera that takes pictures of the TV screen, being put for a second exposure, you can see the result of playback. In view of the fact that 4K-video is now mostly encoded with the new H.265 codec (also HEVC), the testing was conducted exclusively with video clips compressed with this codec.

Another question – where is it, take this content (4K 60p)? Do it yourself? Not difficult. We just need to remember that the producers of films on discs have long stopped at the “cinematic” standard, which is 24 frames per second (more precisely, 23,976, and more precisely – 23.97602397602398). Thus, it should be recognized: the Oppo player has a serious safety margin, a big backlog for the future. But whether this reserve will be in demand, it is still impossible to say. However, the first timid 60p-swallows on the market have already appeared: for example, the disc with the film Long walk Billy Linna during a break of the football match.
But back to the beginning. The “central” function of the Oppo player is the reproduction of optical discs, including new standards. You can do this either in the presence of an appropriate TV, or by adjusting the settings in a certain way. So, if the player’s settings make it broadcast 4K-video stream in the original resolution, then when you connect to a Full HD-TV (in our case – to a 1080p capture device), the player refuses to play the inserted Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. In this case, it is proposed to change the disc to another, ordinary Blu-ray with a resolution of 1080p, which is also available in the original box.
Approximately the same thing happens when you try to play an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc with HDR technology on a TV without such technology: the player, realizing that it is connected to a normal 4K-TV, displays a corresponding message.
Fortunately, this does not mean that UHD disks with HDR technology can not be viewed on “regular” 4K-TVs that do not support a wide dynamic range. Playback will take place, only the data will be transferred to the TV in the 8-bit version. Of course, in this case, all the “buns” of the Blu-ray disc will remain intact: the menus, including the Quick menu, are displayed and work flawlessly. However, it would be strange if the Blu-ray player did not work with Java.
Similarly, with success, the Dune player works with ISO images of Blu-ray discs (of course, only Blu-ray with video resolution 1080, because UHD disks have not yet learned to copy). You can play not only ISO files: the Dune player recognizes the folders inside which the content of the Blu-ray disc resides and plays them in the same way as the ISO images.
Unlike Dune, the Oppo player, being out of the box, does not know how to work with either disk images or Blu-ray files, if they are not on the optical media. The player simply does not display ISO files in its explorer, and folders with Blu-ray files look like regular data folders and you can not play the disc. Well, except that one by one run MTS-files, hiding in the depth of the structure of the disk (\ BDMV \ STREAM \).
Here the position is saved by the modified firmware of the player, jailbreak. It is a special files that are copied to a regular flash drive, and it is already inserted into one of the USB-ports of the player.
Starting with such a bootable flash drive, the player “miraculously” starts to see and play ISO files, and also to play folders with Blu-ray-content like regular disks. At the same time, it does not matter where the images of disks or Blu-ray-files are – on a network drive or on a USB-flash / disk.
Here we involuntarily touched upon the issue of format support. True, in this case it was not about formats, but about containers. And the problem did not concern the technical part at all, it’s just that both players are more than in order. Both Oppo and Dune are able to decode absolutely all video and audio formats intended for final viewing or listening. The statement sounds bold and even provocative, but it is so. If you try to find fault with words, then it will not be difficult to find a video that neither Oppo nor Dune can cope with. For example, “raw” video from some professional video cameras in proprietary formats will be impossible to lose any “iron” media player. Because these formats are intended only for installation on a computer with subsequent export to standard watch formats.
Remote control of players is carried out by means of mobile devices, which are included in the same local network to which players are connected. Mobile applications are used for management. Here, Oppo traditionally outperforms Dune, paying much more attention to developing and debugging proprietary mobile software.
Finally, there is one more aspect that dramatically increases the difference in the functionality of the compared devices. It’s about embedded applications and add-ons. If the Dune player is literally stuffed with them, then in Oppo you will not find even a hint of some software that implements functionality in the field of entertainment or information. The only task Oppo – high-quality reproduction of local content, which is on optical disks, USB-drives or in a local network. Communication with the Internet in Oppo UDP-203 is limited only to the interactive function of BD-Live and for automatic firmware update.

It is essential: HDMI v2.0a allows you to output a video stream with a frame size of 4K, a frequency of 60 frames per second and – most importantly – in the extended HDR range. Probably, it is unnecessary to say that the version of HDMI 1.4 does not have such capabilities.
Next – HDMI-input. It is available only in Oppo. For what? Very simple – this player works as an audio and video receiver. Any signal fed to this input passes exactly the same processing that the content played by the player itself is subjected to. Unlike Oppo, Dune offers the possibility of processing only an audio signal, for which the player has a coaxial audio input S / PDIF. Another difference: Oppo offers multi-channel (up to 7.1) analog audio outputs, as well as optical and coaxial. While Dune makes it possible to output audio through optics and coaxial, but analog outputs are limited to stereo sound, but with balanced XLR outputs.
Wired network in both players is the same, it’s gigabit Ethernet. The built-in Wi-Fi adapters in the players are also the same and support the standards of Wi-Fi 802.11 / b / g / n / ac (however, the actual speed of these interfaces in the Dune player raises big questions).
