The company claims to manufacture products in the classic Italian style of Smeg, which is based on three features that inspire the soul in everyday life: know-how, creativity and completeness. Indeed, the devices produced under this brand are not only characterized by a carefully designed design, but also by an interesting design.
Today the reader is given the opportunity to get acquainted with one of the devices, decorated in retro style of the 50s of the last century. The series includes both small appliances and large ones: refrigerators, dishwashers, etc. Consequently, if desired and, if there is a financial possibility, the user can equip the kitchen with household appliances made in a single style solution. The color can also be chosen depending on the preferences and ideas of the arrangement of the kitchen: cream, red, pink, pastel green, black, silver and blue.
Looking at the device, you can truly recognize the design familiar to us from the films and photos of those times. We are more interested in the question of functionality, which will be devoted to the sections that will allow us to get an idea of the results of the work and the ease of operation.

The device arrived in our testing laboratory in a conventional brown box, which contained information about the device and its brief technical specifications. Inside this shipping box was another brightly formed glossy cardboard. On the packaging you can see photos of accessories and the mixer in different angles, as well as read the description and characteristics of the device. Carrying handle box is not equipped.
The case of the device and its accessories are placed in the package with the help of foam plastic inserts, all parts are packed tightly and are protected from shocks and damage during transportation and storage. Opening the box, inside we found:

At first sight
The body of the device with the motor unit is quite heavy, it has a stable shape with a wide base. This design allows you to easily tilt the motor head without the risk of turning the mixer, even in the absence of a counterweight in the form of a set on the basis of the bowl. It seems that the center of gravity does not shift even when kneading the tightest test. Motor head bright color is perfectly combined with a neutral matte base color. A power cord emerges from the bottom of the base. The length of the cord is sufficient for domestic use. The mixer is not equipped with a cord storage compartment.
The motor head is folded by pressing the round button located on the right side of the device under the speed selector. In the same part of the block there are ventilation holes.
The mixing and kneading nozzles are mounted on the lower attachment for the nozzles. The latch, the shaft and the base itself are completely metal, no plastic. The attachments are fitted with a standard method for this type of fastening: just align the grooves on the shaft and nozzle, press it upwards and rotate counter-clockwise until the latch is secured in the corresponding socket.
The socket on the base is equipped with special grooves, which allow to install the bowl and securely hold it in use. There are corresponding tips on the surface of the bottom of the base.
The front mount for installing additional accessories is located on the left side of the motor head. The list of accessories is impressive: meat grinder, grater, nozzles for pasta, ravioli, for cutting fettuccine, etc. The attachment is equipped with a removable cap.
The bottom of the case is equipped with four legs with rubberized inserts designed to counteract slip and damp vibrations during operation. Also on the bottom is the identification plate of the device.
The bowl with a capacity of 4.8 liters is made of polished stainless steel and is equipped with a handle. Metal is processed to a glossy shine, it is smooth to the touch. From the bottom in the bowl there is a conical projection. This form of accessory provides for the possibility of processing small volumes of products. The plastic lid for the bowl is designed to protect against splashing during whipping. A wide (9 cm) loading throat facilitates the addition of ingredients during operation.
Hook for kneading dense dough and flat whisk are made of aluminum. Both nozzles have a complex shape and give the impression of reliable and high-quality parts. Whisk for whipping light products (cream, protein) is made of stainless steel, the head of the fastener is made of aluminum.
A close inspection of the stand mixer Smeg SMF01 left the most favorable impression: stylish appearance, high-quality processing of metal surfaces, simple construction, complex three-dimensional shape of the nozzles. It is important that all accessories are firmly, securely and easily attached to the engine block
The instruction manual is a thick brochure of A5 format. The information is written in 11 languages, including English. The contents of this manual are standard: safety measures, device description, use, cleaning and maintenance. Note the availability of recommendations for the choice of speed and advice on how to get the best results. In the section on cleaning and maintenance, you can find a list of problems, possible causes and solutions. Information is delivered in plain language, all steps and recommendations for operation and cleaning are illustrated by clear diagrams and drawings. The device is fairly simple to use, so a single instruction study will suffice.
In addition to the instructions, a set of cards with recipes of dishes was included with the mixer. The format is a big postcard, slightly larger than A5. The cards are made of dense glossy cardboard, the recipes are presented in several languages, including English. On each side there is one dish, equipped with a colorful photograph. Information is very convenient: at the top – a picture, on the left side – ingredients, on the right – a step-by-step method of preparation. Among the presented dishes: pizza dough, white bread, pasta, mayonnaise, cake, biscuit, etc. All recipes are recognized by us as “live” and adequate, without any comments to the ingredients and the course of preparation.
The leaflet introduces the buyer to other small household appliances of this series. Each device is represented by a photograph and a brief description.
Smeg SMF01 stand mixer will be managed by anyone. To begin with, press the lock / unlock button and, while holding it, raise the motor head up, fix the bowl in the socket and install the necessary nozzle into the lower attachment for the attachments. Then, again pressing and holding the lock button, lower the motor head down. The speed mode is set by moving the switch along the digits that indicate the speed.
On the scale of the switch, on the opposite side of the figure image, there are schematic tips on the recommended speed modes when using different attachments.
- Low speed (from 1 to 3) is designed for mixing and kneading dense dough. At this speed, you can use all three nozzles.
- At medium speed (4 to 7), you can mix thick mixtures (dough for cake, butter with sugar). Use at the same time you can use a flat mixing head and whisk for whipping.
- High speed (from 8 to 10) allows you to whip the whites or cream into a foam and prepare a batter. Do this with a flat nozzle or whisk for whipping.
The mixer is equipped with the Smooth Start function, which allows you to start the device at a low initial speed regardless of the selected speed mode. The speed increases gradually until it reaches the set point. This function helps to prevent damage to the device, nozzles and splashing of ingredients from the bowl.
Before using the mixer for the first time, the manufacturer recommends that you follow standard procedures: remove packaging materials, labels and wash all parts of the device that come into contact with the products during operation. The body and the motor head should be wiped with a damp cloth. Then carefully dried components should be installed in the working position.
Of course, the kneader must be placed on a dry, even and stable surface.
The stand mixer not only pleases the eye with its appearance, but it is also convenient in work. Assembling / disassembly pass without problems. Tips on the surface of the base and buttons help to properly fix and install accessories, which provides the necessary level of safety when using the device. Maintenance is very simple and requires no special action or the use of special cleaning agents. Control is elementary, the design of the switch allows you to make no effort at setting the speed and switching between high-speed modes. A nice ball on top of the switch not only completes the design of the mixer, but also facilitates the movement of the lever.
During the kneading of the dough, the motor head periodically rises slightly. The instruction manual specifies that the partial movement of the motor head when mixing heavy or volumetric mixtures is not a malfunction. This is a normal action that does not affect the correct operation and the life of the mixer. When the mixer is operated for a long time or with heavy work, the motor head may be heated. According to the instruction, this fact is not evidence of a malfunction.
In all other respects, the kneader works as a high-quality and powerful appliance designed for whipping and stirring. We consider it necessary to tell only one nuance, seen during the testing. The distance between the edges of the nozzles and the inner surface of the bowl is quite large. On the one hand, this prevents damage to accessories and serves security purposes. On the other hand, this fact should be taken into account when working. First, the mixer does not work well with small volumes of products. So, for a quality whipping should take at least 3-4 egg whites or 230 g of cream. Secondly, the working time increases. The duration of kneading, for example, of a dough, is increased compared to other mixers, because the flour remains for a long time on the walls of the bowl – the dough knead rotates in the middle of the bowl without touching the edges. Therefore, at times we just stopped work and shoveled the flour on the batter into the center of the bowl.
In some stand mixers it is possible to adjust the distance between the nozzles and the surface of the bowl, but in this model we did not find this possibility. We draw the attention of the reader to the fact that an ordinary user may not notice the described inconvenience at all, especially if a large amount of ingredients is beaten. In all other respects, Testes showed himself perfectly. For example, the mixer coped with a long batch of very dense dough. However, you can learn more about practical experiments in the corresponding section.
Maintenance of the device is simple and not difficult. The mixer can be washed in a dishwasher. It is recommended to clean the nozzles and the plastic cover with the charging hole manually using a neutral detergent and a soft sponge. The body of the kneading should be wiped with a damp, and then with a dry soft cloth or a microfibre cloth. If there are splashes of oil or grease on the body, they must be removed immediately using a soft cotton cloth.
The maximum recorded power was 175 W when operating at the 10th speed. When dense dough kneading power values ranged from 60 to 110 watts.
The noise level can be assessed as very low. Even with a mixer at high speeds, you can talk without raising your voice. We were not able to find information about the time of continuous work of the kneaders. During the experiments, the maximum operating time was about 20 minutes with small interruptions. In doing so, we mixed very dense dough. The engine block has warmed up, but there was no foreign odor or oddities in the device’s operation.
With regard to the volume of the bowl, the instruction recommends not using more than one kilogram of standard or 800 g of wholemeal flour or high gluten meal for batching. To knead the dough for the paste, take no more than 3 eggs and add a small amount of water. About the minimum volumes, we said above. During the tests, we found out that whisk should be at least 230 grams of cream or 3 proteins from large eggs (preferably 4).
Flour wheat flour – 350 g, rye flour – 150 g, rye fermented malt – 2 tablespoons, water 280 ml, dry yeast – 8 g, vegetable oil – 20 g, salt – 10 g, sugar – 20 g in
We poured yeast with 100 grams of warm water, added sugar and a tablespoon of flour. We set it aside for 10 minutes so that the yeast was activated. Mixed in a bowl of a mixer rye, wheat flour, malt and salt. As recommended for this kneader, poured water with yeast and started kneading at second speed. After a while, poured the remaining water. The dough was kneaded for about 5-7 minutes. At first, the kneading was uniform: the lump of dough moved along the bowl. After a while, the dough seemed to be “smeared” on the bowl so that only the central part began to mash, and the mass adhered to the walls and the bottom remained immovable. We were a little surprised, because the dough hook has an interesting shape with a wide shovel-shaped blade, which would have to grasp the dough well and not let it stay in one place. We stopped the work, scraped off the dough, formed a lump and continued kneading. After a while, the dough was well-blended, although it tried again to smear on the walls of the bowl.
We sent the dough to a proofing in the oven, heated to 35 ° C. After an increase in volume, the lump was crumpled and laid out in a mold. Put them back in a warm place for final climb. Bake at 200 ° C for 30 minutes. As a result, we got an excellent loaf of flavored bread with a fine-grained crumb.
All other experiments (with a dense noodle test, with a relatively soft wheat flour) using the hook confirmed our findings: for a good kneading, you must at least once intervene in the process, manually mold the lump of dough and continue kneading. Otherwise, the dough is distributed over the surface of the bowl and only a small central part of the lump is mixed.

Wheat flour in / s – 350 g, olive oil – 3 tbsp. l., Brewer’s yeast – 15 g, water – 200 ml, salt – 2 pinches.
Brewer’s yeast, which we did not have, was replaced by ordinary dry yeast. We reduced the yeast weight to 6 g. For the sake of experiment, we decided to continue to violate the instructions: dissolved yeast not in 50 ml of warm water, but immediately in the entire volume of the liquid. Add the dissolved yeast to the container with flour, salt and olive oil. Began to knead the dough with a hook at the second speed. We kneaded for about 3-4 minutes until a soft and elastic dough was obtained.
A lump was formed, the bowl was covered with a wet towel and placed in an oven heated to 35 ° C. After about half an hour, the dough increased in volume.
Took off the second proof. At this time, prepared the filling of pizza. After a while, they took out the doubled dough, divided into two parts and molded pizza. Bake at 200 ° C for about 15 minutes.
In general, the yeast dough is mixed well, but it was apparently necessary to follow the instructions and add the main amount of water gradually during the kneading process, as we did in the previous test. When water pours in through the filling hole during operation, it enters the bowl walls and the nozzle and quickly combines with the flour into a single mass. In this experiment, at the beginning of the process, the dough was kneaded only centrally, so we had to stop the mixer and shake the flour off the sides of the bowl to the center.
Then somewhere in the middle of the process the dough was smeared over the walls. We had to stop the mixer and formed into a lump of dough again. After that, the work went without comment. Everything that happened seemed strange to us. The hook gives the impression of a carefully designed part. We never met such a hook shape, in theory the dough should be captured by a wide lower part and be stirred, including the edges of the bowl. Probably, the device that came to the tests needs adjustment.
Soba – buckwheat noodles
One glass of buckwheat flour was mixed with one glass of wheat flour, poured a little water and started kneading. At the first stage, the dough was friable and very steep, but the dough kneader coped with the stirring perfectly.
Water was slowly added until the desired density test was obtained. The dough was kneaded for a long time, not less than 15 minutes. Then we rolled the dough into a ball, put it in a plastic bag and put it away for 10 minutes.
The ball was divided into four parts. Each of them was rolled into a thin flat cake, abundantly sprinkled the surface with flour, cut the layer into three parts to obtain the desired length of noodles. Lay the layers on top of each other and cut into strips about 3-4 mm wide.
Since the noodles are fresh, we cooked it for a few minutes. At the end of cooking, the noodles were immediately washed with cold water. At this time, the onions, garlic, carrots and pieces pre-marinated in a mixture of teriyaki, ginger and wasabi of chicken breast were fried in a heated frying pan. After the readiness of meat and vegetables, buckwheat noodles were added to the skillet. Well warmed up.
When mixing even a very dense test, there were no large power surges. The head of the engine block lifted up, towards the end of the batch it was heated, but the device worked without any problems. A couple of times we scraped the dough from the sides of the bowl. Toward the end, when the dough has been aligned on the liquid / flour and kneaded primary, the lump ceased to adhere to the walls, and was mainly kneaded by friction against the walls of the bowl.
By the way, this dish is in the cards with recipes included in the mixer kit. The recipe is interesting, of course, not the composition of the dish (cream and powdered sugar), but a sequence of actions. Everyone who worked with cream was faced with problems. We will not discuss the quality of the source product, each solves this problem independently. The main task is not to break the cream, resulting in an inhomogeneous mass with the evolving liquid. Also the purpose of this experiment is to determine the minimum volume of the product, at which the mixer will successfully cope with whipping.
We took a proven cream of Parmalat, designed for whipping, and fully followed the recommendations outlined in the recipe. 250 ml of cooled cream was whipped at the 6th speed for 30 seconds. Sprinkled 25 g of powdered sugar and continued whipping, increasing the speed to 9 / 10th. Beat until a firm consistency is obtained.
Then we put the cream in a confectioner’s bag. Some of the cream was served with fresh strawberries, another dessert was made with sweet berry puree (strawberries cooked with sugar in a 2:1 ratio, then blended)
Conclusions and feedback about Smeg SMF01
The stand mixer Smeg SMF01 caused mixed feelings for us. On the one hand, the attractive and undeniably thought-out design of this device and the entire line is admirable. On the other hand, it has a very high price, in our opinion, with very standard functions and results of work.
Undoubtedly, the pluses include low noise level and excellent quality of the body and accessories of the device. The functionality of the mixer can be expanded by using additional attachments. The base of the kneader is equipped with a front attachment for additional accessories. Thus, the stand mixer turns into a full-fledged kitchen machine. The assortment of additional nozzles suitable for SMF01 consists of meat grinder, grater, devices for preparation of ravioli and various kinds of pastes (fettuccini, spaghetti, tagliatelle). Their cost, of course, is quite high, but the products of the Italian company Smeg does not belong to the average price category, but more to the premium one.
In general, the test results are standard for stand mixers. Sometimes a sticky dough needs to be scraped off the surface of the bowl, sometimes a lump of dough hangs on the hook and is kneaded only by striking the surface of the bowl, a small amount of food is not whipped. We note a long time of continuous work. The mixer was heated only after 12 minutes of continuous kneading a very dough. Nevertheless, we expected more from the goods of this class. But – it’s beautiful, it does not take away. Damn beautiful!
