Test and review of Marantz ND8006

Marantz ND8006 review & test

Digital bridge builder.

If you want to keep your CD collections, but are still curious about trying something new, Marantz media player can be a gateway drug for streaming.

Summary

  • + Very versatile. Plays virtually anything. You can sell your CD player, DAC and preamplifier.
  • Can not play SACD or other DVD-based formats.

Although the electronics, especially on the digital side of the old CD player, could need an upgrade, only the most barked nostalgics today will go out and buy a new CD player. If one can find one in a world of downloads and streaming. It is probably easier to find a newly developed analog disc player than a new CD player.

The Marantz ND8006 can be a “bridge builder” between the old and the new world. It can be considered as a CD player, media player, stream, DAC or digital preamplifier. All of these things are built-in.

From the outside, the Marantz ND8006 will fall quite discreetly into the plant on the old CD player’s space. With its centrally positioned CD tray and large display, it looks like a common CD player to confuse. As with other Marantz devices, the front is slightly curved, but without the embedded LED ribbon found on the more expensive components, such as the PM-10 high-end amplifier . Only the front USB port and the number of buttons on the remote control reveal more than CD playback behind the black metal shell.

Marantz ND8006

The Marantz ND8006 looks like an old-fashioned CD player, but in reality it’s both streamers, DAC and digital preamplifier.

Marantz has not fallen for the temptation to mount a DVD driver in ND8006, so be careful about playing CDs of all types. DVDs and SACD are a closed country (but for that purpose there are five times so expensive SA-10 ). Although there is no support for SACD, DSD is supported.

All digital media

But the ND8006 can play much more than CDs. The front and rear USB ports provide both the ability to play files from USB sources and to act as an external sound card for a computer. The latter entry uses asynchronous transmission, so the computer’s hard-loaded clock cycle is not allowed to introduce jitter time distortion.

The Marantz ND8006 has inputs and outputs for all needs.

The really interesting thing about the Marantz ND8006 is the net access. The player has built-in HEOS, which is Denon and Marntz’s multiroms flow system. It supports all the important streaming services, including Tidal and Spotify, as well as Internet radio from Tunein. Everything can be controlled from a HEOS app on the smartphone, and the most important features also from the remote control. The ND8006 has built-in Wifi, but also Ethernet input for secure, wired connection.

In addition to the built-in audio sources and streaming, the ND8006 has three additional digital inputs. As well as Bluetooth for easy streaming from the phone. This makes the player of a digital command center in the facility. Especially since one of two pairs of line outlets is variable, which makes it possible to use the device as a preamplifier.

Put it together with a pair of active speakers or with a power amplifier and two traditional passive speakers, and you have a complete system.

The sound of Marantz ND8006

We tried the Marantz ND8006 in several roles: as digital signal source for streaming, as a complete CD player and as digital preamplifier. It was used both with an integrated NAD M32 high-end amplifier, a NAD M22 V2 power amplifier and our Nelson Pass Zen V2 Class A amplifier.

As a pure digital player, the ND8006 does not make much of it. There are, of course, differences in digital players, but the biggest influence comes from the program material, just like the rest of the chain, including the digital converter, putting a bigger and more clear fingerprint on the sound.

Here it is first and foremost the practical side of the case that you notice. Streaming and internet radio are taken care of by the HEOS system. The user interface is not as readily available as Sonos, but it is still relatively easy to add power subscriptions. And if you have other HEOS components from before, just add the ND8006 to your house system. And unlike Sonos, it handles music files in HD quality. Both local high-resolution files and HD streaming from Tidal Masters.

You can also use the mobile as a signal source by streaming via Bluetooth. It’s comfortable, but you can find the same music on Tidal, and play it directly on the ND8006 via HEOS, you get the sound in full CD quality, rather than highly compressed . The built-in DAC is a Saber ES9016 from ESS. ESS ‘DAC chips are found in both cheap and expensive digital converters.

Connected to the media and CD player via the analogue line output, the Marantz ND8006 is not many steps behind the more expensive NAD. It is not far enough to the walls of the concert hall on classical orchestral works, but the room is still well-designed and the living feeling intact. And the instruments still have good air around them. This is reflected in Hanne Boel’s edition of The Ballad of Lucy Jordan , where the crew is small and the atmosphere intimate.

Otherwise, Magellan’s interpretation of the Genesis number Mama , where the room is filled with gloomy synthesizer voices coming out on the horizon. The Marantz ND8006 does not have high-end ambitions, but supplies the product by performing streaming and online radio in as high quality as the material allows. And with the convenience of the remote control.

As a digital preamplifier, directly connected to a power amplifier, it all becomes even more clear thanks to the shorter signal chain. It’s probably not likely that many ND8006s will end up being paired with an expensive high-end effect block, but we anticipate that some will choose to combine it with active speakers.

Conclusion

The Marantz ND8006 looks like the perfect option if you want to measure powers with new media formats and streaming, while still maintaining contact with the past in the form of the CD collection. As a clean CD player, it is in the expensive layer in terms of performance. But looking at the range of features and connections – including the ability to act as digital preamplifier, the price seems more than reasonable. Moreover, the player through HEOS can function as part of an HD multirom system, an additional plus.
