Yamaha YAS-207 – review and sound

Yamaha YAS-207

Surprisingly great sound

Yamaha was first on the market with active soundboards. This is their first with DTS Virtual: X surround sound.

The sound is spreading outwards and beyond, this soundtrack does a great job in simulating true surround sound.

We miss the display, as LEDs provide a limited overview from a distance. The overtone area could be airier.

Yamaha has long experience in creating sound boards that simulate true surround sound, and some of the creations have impressed us greatly. For the first time, the YAS-207 uses DTS Virtual: X as the surround simulator, which tries to imagine that the sound image also has a height dimension.

The HDMI input supports 4K image signals, but a clear display is missing. Instead, Yamaha uses small LEDs that select the selected input and audio mode.

Sound quality

The subwoofer is more powerful than Philips, Panasonic and Creative. You get a more powerful and bass-sounded sound, without a double bass sounding great musical for that reason. Because there is no refinement in the bass. But it’s not wrong, we think after all music in stereo works quite well. Also with Bluetooth wireless. Here too, there is a bit of air at the top, cymbals and string instruments do not sound completely airy and smooth enough. It sounds a bit “gray”. With Music mode you get a little more treble and you can also use Clear Voice to get details. The downside is that it sounds harder.

It’s on the movie Yamaha glasses, because the audio image in Movie mode is bigger in size than with any of the other soundboards – including Samsung, Sony and LG. You get a sense of height, and on movies we prefer to enable Bass Extension, which provides deeper and more powerful bass. This works badly on music as it sounds too colored and flattering. But movies and, not least, games are funky.

The Yamaha YSP-207 shines with a large sound image on film, which gives way to surround sound and also opens the sound image in height. The sound board is one of the most powerful in its class, making it difficult for movies and games. Music can sometimes be a bit cramped at the top, but it usually works well.

Aside from the lack of display, this is a successful soundtrack and a bargain.
